Waitress Busts Out Against Breast Cancer
You might be surprised to find out that this year’s most novel fundraiser to help fight against breast cancer came from a Philadelphia waitress. Caralea Arnold works at A Full Plate Café on Northern Liberties, and she found a way to raise money and awareness about breast cancer in a way that utilized exactly what she was familiar with.
Arnold created “Bust Out!”, a day to benefit breast cancer survivors sponsored by the Philadelphia restaurant industry. Each participating establishment agreed to create dishes inspired by, looking like or referring to, you guessed it: breasts. Arnold’s own café was quite taken with the idea and is participating.
“I think this creative way of doing this is a fun way to approach the whole idea,” said David Dougherty, whose family owns the café. “It keeps things light, even though it benefits an important issue.”
Each restaurant and café came up with their own sublimely ridiculous dishes. A pair of cupcakes topped with cherries is an idea that was repeated at more than one establishment. If there was a winner for boldness, it would undoubtedly go to Café Estelle. Each of the female employees there volunteered to have a mold of their breasts made, which then when into the design of anatomically correct tres leche cake.
Arnold’s inspirations for creating the project were just as novel as the project itself. Arnold took a personal growth seminar called the Landmark Self-Expression and Leadership Program, offered by Landmark Education, that has each person in the course take on a community project. Why Arnold picked breast cancer is also a bit unusual—No one she knew ever suffered from the disease, but she simply had a passion to make a difference with women’s health issues, and she decided to go for it and take action.
“I wanted to affect a lot of people,” said Arnold. “It just seems the more and more I talk to people, so many women are affected by this disease, and the women have charged through [treatment] and found humor and hope from it.”
In all, fourteen different establishments took part in the Bust Out day, which was August 1. Each eatery agreed to donate a minimum of $250, or 50% of their proceeds for the day from the breast-inspired dishes, whichever was more. This made it possible for Arnold to reach her goal of a minimum of $5,000 raised. The money went to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a Haverford based, 17 year old organization which provides support and services to women who are fighting against or have survived breast cancer.
Living Beyond Breast Cancer CEO enthusiastically bought into the unique form of the fundraiser.
“We get approached by a lot of people wanting to do charity events,” said Living Beyond Breast Cancer CEO Jean Sachs. “But Caralea’s idea was just a really creative way to get the word out and also support local businesses. It’s hard to get attention to breast cancer because there are [so many events and charities] out there. Sometimes a creative idea like this helps.”
