Using the Internet to Identify Beetles in your Home

By: Chris Bloczynski

In this digital age, it's easier than ever to use the power of the internet to educate yourself on nearly any topic or field... expertise can literally be "right at your fingertips", if you know how to use the web properly.

One field that is particularly useful to know a few things about is in insect or pest control. Specialists in this field can be very expensive, and the average consumer is faced with a lot of different choices when it comes to choosing a pest control company or exterminator to work with.

Instead of relying on an exterminator to diagnose and treat beetle infestations, regular people can now use resources on the web to identify beetles and possibly apply their own treatments without hiring an expensive specialist.

Here are some reasons why it might be a good idea to use the internet to try to identify your beetle infestation and educate yourself about appropriate treatments before you call an exterminator.

You may be able to solve the problem on your own.

Small infestations or common beetles may be very easy to treat if you can identify where the beetles are coming from and remove the element that is attracting the beetles there. For example, tobacco beetles (Lasioderma Serricorne) are attracted to and may infest processed tobacco products. Often, sealing the tobacco products up tight and cleaning the surrounding area with ammonia may discourage the beetles from infesting in that area any more.

If you must hire an exterminator, doing your homework before hand can help you figure out who you can trust.

Reading up on beetle behaviors and treatments before you interview an exterminator can be very helpful... when you ask what steps are required to solve your particular beetle problem, you'll know immediately which exterminators are interested in solving your problem and which ones are tacking on extra steps and services that can potentially inflate the price you'll pay them. Having a basic idea of what will be required can save you from paying too much to an exterminator who just wants your money.

You'll get peace of mind from being educated about the real problem and possible solution.

Sometimes the stress of discovering a beetle infestation (or any insect) comes from not knowing what you're dealing with, and you're left to trust the opinion of someone you don't necessarily know with a problem that's unfamiliar and even a little scary to you. You'll be less inclined to carry too much stress when you have a better understanding of what's happening and what steps should be taken to deal with it.

You'll be well-armed if you ever encounter a beetle infestation again.

Having been through the infestation issue before, you'll feel more confident and qualified to make the right decision if it ever happens to you again. Like with nearly everything, repetition breeds familiarity.

In conclusion, it's important to say that some beetle infestations may be way too big or complicated for the average person to deal with. You won't be able to solve every infestation issue on your own, and there will be times that you'll need to call on an expert to deal with something that you're simply not qualified for. In these cases, it will still help to be educated and prepared by using the internet to try and determine exactly what type of beetle you're dealing with.
