Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, one of the better known and successful firearms training facility in the nation, trains novices as well as experienced people the finer points of self-defense. When Ignatius Piazza created and founded Front Sight in 1996 his goal was that the good citizens of the United States be empowered to defend themselves against crime. With that in mind, he created courses for the beginner who has never touched or seen a gun and for those who use guns everyday (such as police officers). Another course offered is the Martial Arts training that include empty handed defense, advanced martial arts defense, and edged weapons defense. This story in the news illustrates how knowing martial arts can save a victim’s life: Maurice Parks was a transit worker in New York when he fended off attackers who tried to rob him at knife-point as he emerged from a subway station near his home. The exchange left one man dead and Parks and another man seriously wounded. Parks is a black belt in a branch of jujitsu known as VSK jujitsu and a friend says that Parks might have been a target because he was a “smaller guy, kind of quiet” but that Parks trained with bigger people. If Parks had not had the training and skills to defend himself he probably would have been robbed, if not killed that evening. An attacker with a knife intent on robbery has a single minded agenda but whether or not murder is part of his plan is completely unpredictable. Front Sight trains people how to use key martial arts techniques skillfully and quickly to neutralize a potentially deadly situation. In situations like this the victim has mere seconds to fend off an attacker. One key move when an attacker holds a pistol to a victim’s forehead is to use the arm to brush her hand to the side and give the victim a moment to dislodge the gun from the attacker’s grip. Ignatius Piazza received the best and most up-to-date self-defense techniques before founding Front Sight. He hires only world-class instructors who must pass two tests before they are hired and he keeps in mind when creating courses that the average victim has mere seconds to avoid harm. By using techniques such as the one above, it becomes easy to see how empowering learning self-defense can be. Perpetrators use surprise as their number one weapon against his victim; they are also careful in their selection of who they are going to rob. A person who looks meek and appears easy to handle is a perpetrator’s favorite target. Maurice Parks looked as such, but the would-be robbers got their own surprise when Parks used his skills against them. Ignatius Piazza created Front Sight because his passion and single minded goal is to show the nation how easy it is to save your own life with a little bit of education; he contends that even one day of training puts potential victims at a great advantage.
